You don't have to go to a restaurant to have a root beer float. It's very easy to make your own. Here's how.

From Quick Guide: Ultimate Ice Cream Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 large mug or beer stein for each person
  • 2 cups of root beer for each person
  • vanilla ice cream
  • long handled ice tea spoons
  • straws
  1. Step 1

Place each mug in the freezer for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will chill the glass and cause it to be frosty when you serve it so it will taste and feel like an authentic root beer float.

  2. Step 2

Put two or three generous scoops of vanilla ice cream into the chilled mugs.

  3. Step 3

Pour in the root beer. This is where the trickiest part of making a root beer float comes. The soda will produce a lot more froth and bubbles than you would expect. So, you have to pour the root beer over the ice cream very slowly. Let the froth happen - it is like a "head" on a serving of alcoholic beer. But don't serve the float yet. Give it a few seconds to settle. Then pour in some more root beer. Repeat this until the mug is filled.

  4. Step 4

Rest a long handled iced teaspoon in the mug.

  5. Step 5

Add a straw and serve. It is fun to watch the different methods by which people attack their root beer floats. Some start with the ice cream. Others slurp up the soda. Others stir the ice cream to make a thicker liquid to drink. Do you have enough for seconds? It might be a good idea.
