Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
First, dress appropriately. This is not only to show the potential employer you mean business, but to also keep you confident while filling out your job application.
Step2
Go prepared. When filling out employment applications for potential job opportunities you will need to bring with you a list of past employers with their information, pen (one with erasable ink works great), driver's license, Social Security card, and pre-selected/contacted job references. A resume may also be required, depending on the type of job you are trying to acquire in your job hunt.
Step3
When you reach the front desk of the potential employer, ask the front desk clerk about job openings. Many times, rather they are hiring or not they will hand you a application. Sometimes they will let you bring the resume back to the business site, a employment application for a major companies will usually be done on site or on the computer.
Step4
Sit down if possible to complete your application. Completing a job application is not a race, to not be compelled to speed through the process. If you brought all the stuff with you in step two, you should have no need to bother anyone for a phone book or pen. Many secretaries will make notes of a applicant on there resume when they come in. One of the most common negative comments are that the applicant came in unprepared.
Step5
Attach your resume to the employment application.
Step6
When handing the employment application to the front desk person, thank the person for their time. Be pleasant and smile. If the front desk person does not seem very busy you may ask one to two questions about the job, any more then that would be taking up to much of their time. Do not ask about benefits or any form of compensation at this point.

on 5/14/2008 These are great tips! Being put on the spot is difficult. And I can't tell you the number of times I have seen people in their inappropriate street clothes in a business filling out applications!
Thanks for sharing!
