Talking about money with your teen need not be a battle. If you encase the money talk within the sex talk the child is more open to just listen and not demand her way. You have a captive audience so go for it.
Which brings me to another topic. As you get older you will no doubt want to wear $600 silk designer jeans and $500.00 tennis shoes and $2,500.00 Louis Vuitton Handbags that you see in fashion magazines. Honey, those items are for people who have JOBS.
Those items are there because they are the treats of the very rich and the advertisements themselves are designed to pull in the nouveau riche or the newly rich who have not learned that they should cut the tags off of their clothing. (I learned that from a Learning Annex class by Genie Sayles on the rich.) You will be provided with clothing, shoes and accessories but if you want an item we will pay you a certain amount for it and then you have to work and provide the extras to get the top of the line item you want, okay?
When you do start working summer jobs and you get your paycheck you should give 10% to a charity or to church or synagogue, 15% is savings that we, your parents will put into your Roth IRA for your retirement, 5% savings in cash and then you can spend the rest on anything you want. That is how you will be able to use your money on top of the line designer items.
You know you want to go and eat lunch at Bloomingdale’s and buy expensive perfume at cosmetic counters in ritzy stores with your friends and wear Prada handbags and Joel Maddens, Uggs and Timberlands. Go for it, but with your own money honey.

If you get pregnant at 12 years old let me show you the crazy life that you could have going into the future. After you have the baby it will be a lot of sleepless nights with the baby and three years will go by in a blur. Then you will be 15 and the normal age to really have strong sexual urges and your compulsions will drive you to have be so boy crazy that you will run away with your new boyfriend and we will have to put a picture up at your school to find you kind of like those kids you see on the back of milk cartons now.
Or you and your boyfriend will steal a car and then the probation officer will come and take you away. Or the new guy that you are having sex with decides that he wants to beat you while you are pregnant because he doesn’t want the baby. Or you could be with your friends driving a car at 90 miles an hour playing follow the leader and get into a car accident and die. Or you could get into a car accident and lose the new angel baby that you were carrying.
Or you could be getting high with your boyfriend in the car and get into an accident and have to be taken to the hospital where you will then cry for your momma as they have to put your broken arm into a cast. Or you will get plastered one night from drinking 40 ounces of malt liquor with your friends and fall down three flights of basement stairs when you get in the house. Or even worse kill somebody and have to have people call you a “murderer” or a “drunk driver.” I understand that “something’s got you sooooooo excited, baby” but you better THINK too. (From Mary J. I heard about a situation with one girl in my high school days whose boyfriend was visiting a friend of hers. The girl's friend went into her bedroom and got naked while he was cooking in the kitchen. She comes out of her bedroom and goes into the kitchen naked. He then tells her that he will have sex with her, but he is not responsible for what happens later and will not care about what happens to her after they make love. Well, she got pregnant and the guy’s girlfriend was pregnant at the same time and they got into a fight out in the streets when they were both NINE month’s pregnant, their stomachs bumping each other, their breasts being punched, their faces slapped, their hair being pulled, their eyes being bloodied up and their bodies being scratched up was considered a “funny” fight by the spectators in their neighborhood who let the fight go on and didn’t stop it. All of this drama over a man that TOLD you he did not care.
