Running the bases can be as difficult to many baseball players, as hitting the ball. Running the bases take mental and physical ability. You have to make a instant decision, a second could determine the outcome of the play.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two runners.
  1. Step 1

As a coach you want to have a sign that indicates, that the base runner will be doing the long lead.

  2. Step 2

The long lead can be used any time you have a runner on 1st and 3rd with less than two outs.

  3. Step 3

What you want to do is have the runner on first take a lead that will have the pitcher throw over.

  4. Step 4

When the pitcher throws over have the runner on first get into a pickle.

  5. Step 5

As he gets into the pickle, the runner on third should be ready to take off and score.

  6. Step 6

If they notice the runner at third inching toward home they will throw home, then the runner at third can go back to third, and the runner on 1st can advance to 2nd.

  7. Step 7

Or instead of getting into a pickle have the runner run straight to 2nd, forcing the throw, if there is no throw you have a runner on 2nd and 3rd.

  8. Step 8

If there is a throw, the runner on 3rd should score.

Tips & Warnings
  • If performed properly you will score a run.
  • Runners need to be aware what is going on, and know that they are using themself as bait.
