How to Have Peace That Passes All Understanding

As Christians, we are instructed to have peace that passes all understanding in: Philippians 4:6-7 - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The way of the world today, it’s hard NOT to worry about things. This is a guide using Scripture to have peace that passes all understanding. I used passages from the King James Version [KJV]. This article assumes you are a Christian, at the end I have attached a link to an article with the plan of salvation if you have not, but may be interested.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Prayer journal
  • Bible
  • Quiet time

Step1
Step 1 – JESUS SAID, “DON’T WORRY”

Matthew 6:25-34 [KJV]
25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Step2
Step 2 - JESUS SAID, “DON’T BE TROUBLED”

John 14:1-3 [KJV]
1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
Step3
Step 3 – TRUST THE LORD – Instructions from David

Psalms 5:7-12 [KJV]
7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. 8 Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; Make Your way straight before my face. 9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; Their inward part is destruction; Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue. 10 Pronounce them guilty, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels; Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, For they have rebelled against You. 11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. 12 For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.
Step4
Step 4 – PRAY [KJV] – Instructions from Paul
2 Corinthians 13:7-10
7 Now I* pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do what is honorable, though we may seem disqualified. 8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. 9 For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. And this also we pray, that you may be made complete. 10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction.
Step5
Step 5 – CALL ON THE LORD [KJV] – Instructions from David
Psalms 4:1-5
1 To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. 2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? Selah 3 But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The Lord will hear when I call to Him. 4 Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the Lord.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a prayer journal and keep track of what has done, or what He is doing
  • Keep a Bible handy, or access one online
  • Don't forget to say a prayer of thanksgiving when you buy groceries, or gasoline - so many families have trouble just getting the basics, remember them
  • Find a prayer partner
  • Don't treat God like a cosmic lottery - being a Christian doesn't make every path smooth.
  • Scripture spends a lot of time instructing us NOT to worry - I think it's because the Lord knows our human nature
  • Your prayers don't have to be eloquent, you are talking to God
