A wreath is a wonderful tradition. You can use a wreath as a divine tribute to nature, a holiday centerpiece, a door ornament or a unique gift. A wreath can be small enough to be an earring or large enough to encircle a car. Home wreaths are perfect for Thanksgiving, Valentine's or Christmas. They can be hung on a door or wall or laid flat on a table as beautiful centerpieces. With these simple steps you can turn a basic frame into a creative wreath for any season. Instructions

Size. Decide how you will display your wreath. A decorated wreath will be larger and heavier than the basic frame. Choose a wreath diameter smaller than your planned display space to allow for the larger finished design.

      Bare frame

Frame. A woven frame is inexpensive, lightweight and easy to handle. Willow or vine frames are natural in color and blend with any decorations. They can be purchased at many craft or dollar stores.

Decor. Choose a seasonal theme. Garlands with fabric flowers, autumn leaves, feathered birds, seasonal berries and trim are easily found at craft stores and during holiday sales. Long decorative evergreen garlands are perfect for making a Christmas wreath.

Design. Use a cable tie to secure one end of the garland to the wreath. Wind the garland around the wreath. You can have an open design so that the woven frame is part of the visual appeal. Or you can tightly wrap the garland to fully cover the wreath. When one garland ends, attach another and continue winding your trim until you reach the starting point.

Accents. When your design suits you, use extra cable ties or plastic ties tucked under the trim to anchor the garland at several points around the circle. Add any extra decorations such as pumpkins and apples for Thanksgiving or hearts for Valentine's.

Finish. Add a sturdy cable tie loop at the back to hang the wreath. You may also add a coordinating bow trailing down from the wreath. For a door wreath, use a cable tie to anchor a plastic clip at the bottom of the wreath. This is a wonderful place for leaving notes.

Finally. Use one basic frame and change decorations for each season by snipping off the cable ties and unwinding the garland. Half a dozen finished wreaths are space-consuming, but one wreath frame and storage bags of seasonal garlands are much easier to store.
