Mild acne can be treated with over-the-counter products instead of prescriptions or going to a dermatologist. Find out how to treat mild acne.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Salicylic acid or triclosan facial cleanser
  • Salicylic acid gel
  • Benzoyl peroxide cream
  • Oil-free moisturizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Clay mask
  1. Step 1

Wash twice daily (in the morning and before bed) with a facial cleanser containing salicylic acid, which helps clear the pores. Or, use a cleanser with triclosan, which combats acne bacteria.

  2. Step 2

After washing your face, apply a gel containing salicylic acid to your entire face. Let dry.

  3. Step 3

Dot on benzoyl peroxide cream only on any current blemishes. Use the 2.5 percent cream. It works just as well as the 5 and 10 percent creams but will not be as drying.

  4. Step 4

Apply a light, oil-free moisturizer, possibly one containing sunscreen. Or, apply sunscreen following the moisturizer. Look for a sensitive-skin formula or one with zinc oxide to avoid irritating the acne.

  5. Step 5

Once a week, use a clay mask, which helps draw out impurities and dry up acne blemishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If over-the-counter methods fail to work, consult a dermatologist.
  • Salicylic acid can make your face more sensitive to the UV rays of the sun due to its exfoliating factor. Use at least an SPF of 30 when you go outside. This is especially important if you have fair skin.
