Things You'll Need:
- Batteries
-
Step 1
Put batteries in the universal remote control. Make sure that the batteries are in good working order.
-
Step 2
Program the universal remote to control the electronic devices. A universal remote control can be programmed to control just about any electronic device, such as a television, VCR, DVD player, cable box or stereo. However, until it is programmed to send a signal for your particular devices, the universal remote control will not work them. Refer to the manual that came with the universal remote control for instructions on programming the universal remote control.
-
Step 3
Locate the mode buttons on the universal remote control. The universal remote control has several buttons, such as TV, VCR, DVD, CBL (for cable box) and AUX (for auxiliary, which is for stereos and other electronic devices). Those buttons tell the remote control in which capacity you want it to operate.
-
Step 4
Select the mode for the device you want to turn on. Press the button that corresponds with the electronic device that you want to turn on. After you press the button, the universal remote will operate as the remote control for the selected device.
-
Step 5
Point the universal remote control at the electronic device. When you use the universal remote control, it sends a signal to the electronic device, to which the electronic device reads and responds. Make sure there are no objects blocking the signal from the universal remote control to the device.
-
Step 6
Press the power button, which is generally located at the top of a universal remote control. However, different types of universal remote controls may vary.
