Also known as double picking, Tremolo Picking is a musical technique where the artist plays notes repeatedly in rapid succession. Although Tremolo Picking is most recognized in the form of the heavy metal music genre, it can actually add a touch of spice to almost any style of guitar playing. Many artists enjoy Tremolo Picking because it adds a new challenge to their guitar playing ability. If you would be interested in giving it a try, here is how to Tremolo Pick on your electric guitar.

  1. Step 1

    Decide what you are going to play. Tremolo Picking can be used to warm up, to play a song, or even just for a bit of quick improvisational playing. If you are new to Tremolo Picking, you may wish to start by just playing warm ups until you gain good rhythm.

  2. Step 2

    Select a hard, firm guitar pick. Tremolo Picking is very fast, and picks that are thin and flexible will be more prone to breaking. An idea guitar pick to use for Tremolo Picking is Fender 1.14S, although any guitar pick that is hard and thick will work well.

  3. Step 3

    Begin to quickly Double Pick the guitar string with an up-down picking motion. The picking must be fast and on an even, steady rhythm. This is the difficult part for those who are new to Tremolo Picking. It may be helpful to rest your pinky finger against the body of the guitar to help keep your hand steady.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although it sounds very simple, some people have a hard time picking it up right away. Be persistent and continue to practice and it will eventually just click and fall into place.
