Treat diarrhea without medicines

Whether you have the stomach flu or just a "bug," there are easy and effective ways to treat diarrhea at home without medication. But if it persists for several days, you should seek the advice of a physician.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drinking water
  • Electrolyte products (such as Gatorade or Pedialyte)
  • Heating pad
  • Yogurt (with live cultures)
  • Cooked rice
  • Bananas
  • Plain crackers
  1. Step 1

Rest on the couch or in bed so your body has a better chance of fighting off the bug or infection that is causing the diarrhea.

  2. Step 2

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte solution, such as Gatorade or Pedialyte.

  3. Step 3

Place a warmed heating pad on your stomach if you experiencing stomach cramps due to the diarrhea.

  4. Step 4

Begin eating small amounts of food. Just as with children, you can follow the BRAT diet but form it to fit your taste. Eating a banana is a great place to begin, and is the B in the BRAT diet. Just make sure that you are continuing to drink fluids.

  5. Step 5

Move on to something bland, such as plain yogurt (with live active cultures) or cooked plain rice. The rice is the R in the BRAT diet and will work with the banana as a binder.

  6. Step 6

Be aware that the A stands for applesauce, but you can skip this unless you really want to eat it. Apples can be good or bad on your digestion and for adults it would probably be okay to skip the A and move on to the T, which is Toast. Crackers are handier though, so you can have them beside you while you rest. After eating the crackers, continue rest and repeat the BRAT diet until your symptoms have diminished.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your symptoms of diarrhea persist for several days or you are experiencing other symptoms, consult a physician immediately.
