In this experiment you will make something that is liquid when it's under pressure and it's close to solid when it's squeezed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • test tube
  • water
  • bowl
  • teaspoon
  • cornstarch

Step1
Fill the test tube to the "12" mark with water. Pour the water in a bowl. Now do that again!
Step2
Add a level teaspoonful of cornstarch to the bowl and stir. Keep adding a little cornstarch and stirring until it slowly runs when you tip the bowl.
Step3
Now pick up the mixture and try to squeeze it. Pretty amazing huh?

Tips & Warnings

  • Cornstarch is a polymer made up of long, chainlike molecules. When you squeeze the mixture, the molecules become tangled, that's why it stiffens.
  • This is a very very messy project. It's almost impossible to avoid a mess.
