1. Step 1

See if you and your child can visit the school ahead of time. This way you can see how comfortable your child is with the environment. Often times, there are orientation sessions held the summer before your child attends. If you are lucky, the school will hold them for one to three hours for a few days prior to the beginning of school. Your child can then learn their way around and find classes ahead of time.

  2. Step 2

Encourage play dates and interact with children in the area that will be attending the same school. Perhaps you can sign up for the same activities through the local recreation department.

  3. Step 3

Encourage your child to keep a daily planner or assignment notebook. This is a good habit that will carry them through high school. It also gives you a road map of what they are working on. Have them keep a map of the school with them.

  4. Step 4

Have your child meet the teachers either at orientation or registration.

  5. Step 5

Shop for everything the child needs ahead of schedule and have them help you with this. Consult the supply list provided by the school. You can even pick up items at registration.

  6. Step 6

If the school allows, visit your child about once a month to see if they are adjusting properly. You can also volunteer for activities such as field trips so you can stay involved and spend time with your child while getting to know his friends.

  7. Step 7

Consult the school guidance counselor immediately if you have any questions or concerns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage your child to ask questions as soon as they do not grasp a concept.
  •
Always attend parent-teacher conferences.
  •
Keep the lines of communication open with the teachers.
