Headaches can be treated with things besides aspirin. You can massage away a headache in a holistic and medicine-free way with a firm yet gentle hand, a few moments of quiet time and several simple tips.

From Quick Guide: Deep Tissue Massage Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit comfortably in a soothing, quiet space. This could include your couch, an outdoor bench or the bathroom stall at work if that’s your only option.

  2. Step 2

Take several deep breaths, further relaxing your neck, eyeballs and head with each exhale.

  3. Step 3

Using the middle finger of each hand, massage your temples in a circular motion. Rotate your fingers clockwise, then counterclockwise, for at least 10 counts each.

  4. Step 4

Use the middle fingers to massage the points right above the eyeballs for 10 counts in each direction.

  5. Step 5

Splay your hands and run them through your hair and over the top of your head. Rotate all your fingers clockwise, then counterclockwise, for at least 10 counts in each direction.

  6. Step 6

Move your splayed hands to the base of your skull and back of your neck, rotating hands again in counts of 10.

  7. Step 7

Finish up with a firm but gentle grasp of the muscles at the base of your neck, again using a rotating massaging motion for 10 counts in each direction.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repeat the massage as many times as necessary until your headache flees.
  •
Continue to breathe deeply throughout the entire process.
  •
Concentrate only on your fingers touching your skin, not how dumb you feel sitting in a bathroom stall.
