•
Baby lotion (optional)
  1. Step 1

Prepare. It is important to get together everything that you will need for your baby's bath, and place them within handy distance of your baby's bath. This is important because you must never leave your baby unattended. Make sure the room you give your baby a bath in is warm and draft-free.

  2. Step 2

Run 2 to 3 inches of water in your baby tub. Make sure the water is comfortably lukewarm, which is about 90 to100 degrees F. Test the water's temperature with your elbow, wrist or other sensitive area of skin.

  3. Step 3

Undress your baby and gradually slip her into the bath water. For safety, always have one hand holding onto the baby while he is in the bath until he is able to sit up on his own.

  4. Step 4

Pour some baby soap onto the washcloth and use it to gently wash your baby. Begin with the face, leaving the diaper area for last. Be sure to clean between the folds of the baby's skin, between the toes and fingers, as well as behind the ears. Rinse the baby off with a clean washcloth.

  5. Step 5

Tilt your baby backward until his head is just above the water, making sure to give proper support to his head. Wet the hair and then work some shampoo into it. Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips. Cup your hand and use it to rinse off the shampoo.

  6. Step 6

Lift the baby from the water and wrap her in a soft bath towel. Gently pat her dry. Do not rub. Gently massage baby oil all over the baby's body, if you like. Put on a clean diaper and dress your baby.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to give you baby baths in a baby tub or the kitchen sink until he is able to sit up by himself.
  • Never give a baby a bath until their umbilical cord has fallen off. You should also wait until your son's circumcision, if one was performed, is healed. Sponge baths will suffice until then.
  •
Do not ever leave a baby unattended in a bathtub. An inch or 2 of water is enough for a baby to drown in. If you forget an item, carry the baby with you to go get it.
