Not matter where you are going, it is always possible to spend a little less if you get organized and plan your trip well. In fact, traveling for cheap should always be your goal, no matter where you’re going and how much you have to spend once you get there.

From Quick Guide: Budget Travel Primer
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the Internet to plan everything. Not only can you compare prices and locations, but you can also find contact information for hotels, research alternative sleeping arrangements and read reviews from other travelers. Many companies also offer a special discount if you pay online. You can also research free or discounted days for museums and other popular attractions in your chosen destination.

  2. Step 2

Always have a second option in mind. If you can’t afford to fly to Orlando, how about flying to Florida and then taking a bus to your final destination. Or look into renting a car rather than taking the train.

  3. Step 3

Don’t think of flying as an expensive way of traveling. In fact, flights can turn out to be one of the cheapest options if you take your time to research what is available. For example, a lot of companies offer last-minute tickets. If you are willing to hop into a plane with only two-days notice, you may be able to get a ticket that is 50 to 70 percent cheaper than the official price.

  4. Step 4

Look for alternative accommodations. If a hotel is out of your budget and you don’t mind sharing basic accommodations with others, a youth hostel can be the perfect solution. You can also rent an apartment to save money on meals, go camping, or swap homes with other travelers.

  5. Step 5

Travel in the off season. This may the easiest way to save money on a vacation. For example, consider visiting Florida in summer and Paris in the Fall. It’s easier to find a good deal then because there are fewer bookings and companies are eager to strike a deal. This may not work everywhere (New York City is in high-season year-round), but it’s worth a try.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always locate accommodations well in advance. The earlier you book a hotel room, the more chances you will be able to negotiate a price or have access to the cheapest rooms.
