Washing clothes by hand takes longer than it takes to wash your clothes my machine. However, it can prolong the life of your clothes as well as save you a bit of money. If you live in an apartment, it will also save you the pain of carrying clothes up and down the stairs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Laundry detergent
  •
Wash board
  •
Large plastic tub
  •
Bathtub
  •
Stain treatment spray
  •
Hangers
  •
Clothesline (optional)
  1. Step 1

Separate your clothing into loads. You should make one load for white clothes, one load for light-colored clothes and one load for darks. I tend to wash bright red items with black clothes unless I have a lot of bright items, then I make another load.

  2. Step 2

Start with the white load since it is easier. Fill the tub with hot water adding bleach and laundry detergent. Then submerge the white clothes into the water and stir. If the water is too hot for your hand, and it should be, use a short pole like the handle of a plunger.

  3. Step 3

Let the clothes sit in the water and soak for about an hour. Using the washboard to rub the dirty clothes against, scrub one piece of laundry at a time. As you scrub each piece, place it in the washtub.

  4. Step 4

After the laundry has been all scrubbed with stains removed, empty the dirty water from the tub and fill it again, this time without adding cleaners or bleach.

Wring out each piece and hang it on hangers over the bathtub or on a clothesline. Unless you have very strong hands, the clothes will drip for a while, so be sure to take measure to prevent the water from dripping outside of the tub.

Tips & Warnings
  • Smaller loads can be washed in the kitchen or bathroom sink.

  •
If you plan to wash clothes by hand on a regular basis, you may want to install a second pole in above the tub to dry clothes on.
  • If you live in an apartment building, don't hang dripping clothes from a clothesline, as it may disturb your neighbors.
