A hot stone massage is a specialty type of massage. Heated stones help release and soothe tight, sore muscles, resulting in a deeply relaxing massage. For best results, you should visit a licensed therapist for a hot stone massage. However, it is possible to give a version of a hot stone massage at home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Massage stone
  •
Baby oil or massage oil
  •
Roaster or slow cooker or stone heater
  1. Step 1

Coat the massage stones in baby oil or massage oil.

  2. Step 2

Heat the coated stones in a roaster, slow cooker or special stone heater. If you are using a roaster or slow cooker, cover the stones in water and allow to become very warm. If you are using a stone heater, follow the device's directions.

  3. Step 3

Remove the stones from the appliance using a slotted spoon or tongs. Set them on a towel.

  4. Step 4

Have the person who will receive a hot stone massage lie on their stomach. Test the stones to make sure they are not too hot, as you could burn the person's skin.

  5. Step 5

Set the warm stones on the person's bare skin. Larger stones can be set on larger muscles. Set stones on the back, legs, feet, arms and even in the palms of the hands.

  6. Step 6

Allow the stones to rest for a while. Remove the stones one by one.

Tips & Warnings
  • After removing the stones, give a normal massage by hand. The muscles that received hot stones will be less tense and very relaxed, making the massage even more enjoyable.
  • Never attempt to heat stones in the microwave.
