Freiburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Founded in 1120, the city boasts a variety of impressive historical spots, such as the Freiburger Münster (cathedral), the Martinstor (Gate) and the Bertoldsbrunnen (Bertold's Fountain). Freiburg is famous for its sunny days, its warm climate and its breathtaking scenery. It is an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy time away from the hectic life of the big cities.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Book a hotel in the center of town. This will allow you easy access to public transportation, including taxis, so you can move quickly from one tourist attraction to the next. Hotels out of the city center can be charming but unless you rent a car, you will be hard-pressed to explore everything in just three days. Good hotels in the center include The Schwarwaelder Hof and the City Hotel Freiburg, both within walking distance of the train station and the main attractions in Freiburg.
Step2
Use the first day to explore the city. Get a walking tour map at a local tourism office and spend the day sightseeing the most important buildings. In about four to five hours (depending on whether you go inside the buildings and how much time you spend there), you should be able to see at least the following: Alten Münsterbauhütte (Old Cathedral Construction Cottage), Alte Wache (Old Guard), The Basler Hof in Kaiser-Joseph-Straße (government headquarters on Freiburg's main street) and Deutschordenskommende (historical building now home to Freiburg´s Civil Senate).
Step3
Take lunch breaks at a different place each day. Some of Freiburg’s best eateries are actually historical buildings and an attraction in themselves. Examples include Alte Weinstube zur Traube (housed in a 600-year-old building), Die Hans-Thoma-Stube (serving traditional Black Forest specialities) and the Wiener (fully renovated and popular with the locals). Make sure you try some of the area’s traditional foods, including Schwarzwälder Schinken (Black Forest ham), Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) and Lebkuchen (traditional German cookies).
Step4
Head out of the city on your second day. Freiburg is surrounded by the Black Forest and offers amazing natural spaces to the visitor. The Schauinsland Cable Car and the Schlossberg Lookout Tower offer panoramic views of the city, the forest and the nearby mountain range. The Triberg waterfall is just a short drive out of the city. Germany’s tallest waterfall is surrounded by nature trails and wooden bridges and next to the town of Triberg, which is home to the world’s largest Cuckoo clock.
Step5
Use your last day in Freiburg to visit the city’s landmarks: Freiburger Münster and the two city fountains, Bertoldsbrunnen and Fischbrunnen. They are ideal locations for photos and are surrounded by great shopping opportunities. In the evening, stop by Greiffenegg Schlößle Beer Garden for great drinks and live music (seasonal).
