Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You need to be in good to excellent health to do kick boxing without risking injury.
  1. Step 1

Before attempting to do any kind of martial arts be sure to stretch your body thoroughly. Before doing the roundhouse kick, you must be sure to stretch your hips, groin area, calves and even your feet.

  2. Step 2

Begin your round kick facing your opponent with feet at a comfortable distance apart usually shoulder width. Be sure to maintain an at-ease position.

  3. Step 3

With your leading foot (your left foot if you are right-handed) take a step forward placing your foot on the ground at 45 degrees from the direction you are facing. Your toes will be pointing outward.

  4. Step 4

As your leading foot lands on the floor, your back leg will raise up from the ground with your leg straight. The main movement should be in the hip and your leg will swing up and around your body. Do not lock your knee.

  5. Step 5

Using the momentum from your forward motion, rotate your hip and swing your leg up and towards your opponent hitting them with the top of your outstretched foot or lower leg. Alternately, you can arch your foot, moving your toes out of the way and kick them with the ball of your foot. As you contact your opponent’s body, (or your kick target) snap you leg forward at the knee for additional impact.

  6. Step 6

Keeping your weight on your lead foot, you should return the foot you kicked with to its original position and be ready to kick again.

  7. Step 7

This entire kick should be done swiftly in a matter of two seconds and with enough force to make a kick target with a weighted base rock. In the first second, you will place your lead foot on the ground in the outward angled position and in the next second you will land your kick.
