Step 1
Learn the importance of high school homework. Homework is a life lesson in doing things that, on any other day, you wouldn’t want to. High school homework is a tough lesson for the world. You do need it, because it will put into you the basics of work and the rewards of finishing. Remember, high school is a must. Without college, you can survive, but without high school, few places will hire you, unless you finish with a GED or equivalent program.

Step 2
Stop watching TV. Consider the TV your enemy when doing homework. For one, leaving it on while you’re working is a terrible way to concentrate. Even music can disturb some people and anything more enjoyable is a bad way to set up your study period. Use the strategy of allowing a break to get yourself a nap or some TV time. Few jobs will allow you to watch TV while you are there, or have the music blaring, so make sure you can work without these disturbances. A quiet place to study is very important.

Step 3
Use study hall. Study hall allows you to get some homework done in school, saving time for fun stuff later in the day. Doing English in Math class because an assignment is due is a bad idea. Sure, you might chat with others in this study hall, but you can make this the backbone of your homework time. When you start receiving plenty of assignments, you’ll be thankful you can take an hour or so to sit down and begin them while at school where you can focus.
-
Step 4
Allow a break. Getting right to your homework right after school can work, though often it doesn’t. You need a few hours to recoup, to think on other things (and have a life), so consider taking from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. as your sanctuary moments to watch some TV, talk to friends on the phone and listen to music. You deserve a reward after seven straight hours of school.

Step 5
Survive the senior year. The senior year is often as easy as the freshman year in high school. If you can keep the grades up, getting tuition help for college--a crucial way to save money--will be easier. Homework assignments will be less for most during their senior years and there will be a desire to take it easy for a while, but this is a dangerous habit. Follow the rule of allowing some breaks, maybe adding an hour and you'll be fine. Remember that the homework will be coming when you’re in college, so don’t throw out all your study habits. You need these to maintain a good grasp of writing skills, for example, or remembering the tough classes like algebra and geometry.
