How to use your home built tumble composter

A home built tumble composter is a great way to create rich, nutritious earth for your garden using items you might otherwise throw in the trash. Once you have built your own home built tumble composter, you will need to know how to use it. Here's how to use your home built tumble composter for all the plant-nourishing compost your garden could ever need.

Instructions

1. Store your home built tumble composter in a spot in your yard that receives a lot of sun, as this will help the materials compost more quickly.

2. Collect organic materials to add to your home built tumble composter. The ideal ratio for nutrient-rich compost is 25 parts “brown” material (such as paper, dried leaves, straw or wood chips) to 1 part of “green” material (such as your kitchen scraps or grass clippings). Keep a compost pail in your kitchen to collect scraps, and add them to your composter on a weekly basis.

3. Tumble your home built composter on a daily basis, if at all possible. If you are not able to tumble it daily then do so at least once each week.

4. Do not overfill your home built tumble composter. When your composter is no more than two-thirds full of rich compost, empty it to use in your garden and start a new batch.

• Do not add earthworms to your tumbling composter as the heat and tumbling will likely kill them.
