Walking in the forest is just wonderful for calming your nerves. If you learn the art of walking quietly as well, your enjoyment will be much more as you will see more wildlife as well as be able to hear all the little different sounds around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop Talking! This sounds a little basic, but there are plenty of people that head out for a hike and talk so loud they can be heard a mile away! Use this as a time to think and listen. This is especially true when walking in thick forests and not down a paved walkway! You need to listen to what is going on around you and tune in to the sounds of the forest.

    • 2

Wear cotton clothing. If you are wearing exercise pants - all you will hear is the swish -swish of the plastic fibers. If it winter, try to wear a coat with a cloth exterior as opposed to a nylon covering. When your arms move, they will rub and also cause noise.

    • 3

Slow down! If you take the time to watch where you step, you will not step on so many branches. Less breakage means quieter walking.

    • 4

Listen. When you are trying to listen to things around you, you instinctively get quieter. Try to identify different bird calls or even larger wildlife. You never know what you might see if you are so quiet that the animals can't hear you!

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have learned to be quiet, you might find it irritating when others are noisy!
