Hiking is great exercise and a wonderful chance to explore. It is also an activity the whole family can do together, and it doesn't cost a whole lot of money. Dressing properly for hiking is important for the safety and comfort of your hike.

Things You'll Need:

  • Good shoes
  • Cotton clothing
  • Plenty of layers
  1. Step 1

Always wear some kind of hat when hiking. A good hat or cap will keep the sun out of your eyes and the bugs out of your hair. You will also have protection from sunburn.

  2. Step 2

Footwear is an extremely important part of hiking. Wear heavy cotton socks that will wick away moisture from your feet and prevent blistering. A good hiking shoe will have a sturdy bottom and a firm top to withstand walking through brush. Natural materials are always best when choosing footwear.

  3. Step 3

Wear several layers of shirts. Start out with a cotton t-shirt or thermal shirt. A button-down flannel or long-sleeved cotton shirt over the t-shirt and a lightweight jacket on top of that. If you get warm, you can begin to peel the layers.

  4. Step 4

If you are going on a hike in the deep woods, you will want to wear sturdy jeans or khaki pants. If you are hiking in the hot sun, a pair of cargo shorts will work well. Tucking pants into boots will help prevent ticks.

  5. Step 5

A bandanna around your neck will help to absorb sweat and keep bugs from biting.
