Know When to Hang a Humming Bird Feeder

Hummingbirds are magnificent creatures to watch. It can be great entertainment to sit nearby and watch as hummingbirds flock to your feeders during the spring and summer months. Sometimes it is hard to figure out when to catch these birds in migration. However, if you can pinpoint their travels, you may be able to view humming birds outside of your own home.

From Quick Guide: Hummingbird Gardens
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Browse the Internet or your local library for humming bird migration maps. This will be useful to identify the best time to hang your humming bird feeder.

  2. Step 2

Be on the lookout around late spring or early summer for humming birds. Humming birds do not like cold weather. They usually appear sometime in the spring, after the last frost has passed.

  3. Step 3

Hummingbirds are attracted to flowering plants that are rich in nectar. Hang a humming bird feeder near flowering plants. Some popular flowers that hummingbirds may be attracted to include petunias, fuchsia , humming bird mint and four o'clocks.

  4. Step 4

Check with other neighbors, friends or hummingbird experts to find out when they hang their humming bird feeders. Also visit humming bird farms or greenhouses to ask for advice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not spray pesticides around areas where you would like to hang your hummingbird feeders. Hummingbirds could accidentally ingest these toxic fumes and it could cause them to get sick and die.
