Changing a bike tube is something that anyone can do. Learn it so that, if you do have a flat on the road, you can fix it and get riding again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Removing the Old Inner Tube

  1. Step 1

Remove the bike wheel. If your bike is fairly new, it probably has a quick release lever. Flip it open and take the wheel off.

  2. Step 2

If your bike has axle nuts holding the wheel in place, loosen them with a wrench and slide the wheel off.

  3. Step 3

If you are removing the rear wheel, carefully remove the drive chain from the rear sprockets.

  4. Step 4

Once the wheel is off, deflate the tire completely.

  5. Step 5

Slide the round end of a tire iron between the wheel and the tire.

  6. Step 6

Hook the free end of the tire iron around one of the spokes, prying the tire away from the rim.

  7. Step 7

Slide another tire iron in beside the first. Move it along the rim of the tire until it pops free of the wheel.

  8. Step 8

    Remove the inner tube.

  9. Installing the New Inner Tube.

  10. Step 1

Make sure the tire is properly set. One edge of it should still be inside the wheel, while the other edge should be out.

  11. Step 2

Put the new inner tube in, lining up the valve with the valve hole in the wheel. Remove any twists in the tube, and make sure it is sitting up against the tire.

  12. Step 3

Inflate the tube slightly, and make sure that it doesn't have any twists in it.

  13. Step 4

Try to get the other edge of the wheel into place with your hands. Push as much as possible inside the rim of the wheel.

  14. Step 5

Use a tire iron as a lever to push the rest of the wheel on. Insert the end of it against the inside of the wheel, push against the tire, and gently slide it into the wheel.

  15. Step 6

Slide the tire iron around the wheel, pushing the tire in.

  16. Step 7

    Fully inflate the new tube.

  17. Step 8

    Put the wheel back on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Putting the tire back on can be tough. Don't get discouraged and don't rush it. If you do, you might pinch the inner tube and damage it.
