Step 1
Buy the right deadbolt door lock assembly. There are various styles of deadbolt door locks on the market today. The best way to replace one is to use the same brand and model that you currently have. If you purchase a different type, you will most likely have to re-drill the door, as the new deadbolt door lock may not line up with the old one. Also make sure you know if your deadbolt door lock is either a left- or right-handed door and note the doors depth to ensure the new deadbolt door lock fits and works properly.
-
Step 2
Remove the old deadbolt door lock with a screwdriver by removing the screws securing it. Deadbolt door locks vary, but most will have six screws. Make note of how the deadbolt door lock is assembled as you take it apart.
-
Step 3
Test the new deadbolt door lock assembly. Check to be sure your new deadbolt door lock will fit in the knob hole and the latch (hole and plate) area in the door. If it does not fit the knob hole, use a file to increase it. If the latch hole is to small, do the same to it. Check the latch plate area to be sure it is even with the edge of the door. If not, use a wood chisel to correct this. Make sure the two sides of the deadbolt door lock are properly aligned and use a screwdriver to loosely assemble it. The specific steps used do vary from model to model. It is recommended that you follow instructions provided with the deadbolt door lock, if you have any trouble assembling it.
-
Step 4
Secure the deadbolt door lock. Use a screwdriver and tighten all screws on the deadbolt door lock assembly.
-
Step 5
Test the new deadbolt door lock. After you have installed your deadbolt door lock, be sure to test the keys and lock on the inside as well as the outside.
