Step 1
The saw scaled viper can be readily identified by one very clear warning. When you approach one of these snakes, it will quickly rub its body against itself and produce a "sizzling" or "buzzing" sound that is quite distinctive. This sound is a warning device to let you know it is going to strike. Back away quickly.

Step 2
The saw scaled viper is quite small with adults only getting to be about 60 centimeters in length. Do not let the size fool you, however, as this little snake is loaded with deadly venom. It has been known to strike repeatedly and without provocation.

Step 3
The saw scaled viper is generally a light buff color with shades of rust coloring, and gray. The sides of the snake have white patterns and the head has black stripes that go from the back of the head to the eye. The head is shaped like a pear, but has a clear distinction from the neck. This viper is one tough little cookie.
