How to Add Lights to a Paper Lantern
The soft light coming from a paper lantern has always been a beautiful way to light up your patio or walkway. The dangers of using candles to create the light has become a thing of the past. The risk of fire from a blown over luminary, outweighs it's beauty. But there is another way that is just as lovely.
Things You'll Need
- Light colored paper bags
- Strands of Christmas lights
- Utility knife
- Masking tape
- Stones
Instructions

1
Stick a square of masking tape in the center bottom (inside) of each bag being used for a paper lantern.
-
2
With a scissor, poke a hole through the middle of each bag at the bottom where the tape is placed.

-
3
Attach a bulb to each bag by first removing the bulb from the socket, and slipping the socket into the whole in the bottom of the bag. Do this by placing the bottom of the bag over the socket. Replace the bulb.
-
4
You can then place a few stones in the bottom of the bag to keep it in place.

Tips & Warnings
Use the Christmas light strands with the larger sized bulbs, not the typical tiny ones.
If you would like a more lasting effect, some stores sell all-weather luminary bags. This type of bag can handle the elements so they can still be used on a rainy night.
As with all electrical equipment, special care should be taken.
