How to Decoupage Furniture

Decoupage is the art of assembling cut-out pictures in a collage to make a unique piece of art and then coating them for a final finish. Decoupage can be used on just about anything. If you would like to dress up a boring piece of furniture follow these easy steps and you will be on your way.

Things You'll Need

  • Furniture
  • Cut-outs of pictures
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Popsicle stick
  • Paint brush
  • Rag
  • Lacquer
  • Choose a piece of furniture you want to decoupage. A flat surface is the easiest and it doesn't have to be the entire piece of furniture. For example, you can do the top of a table, the seat of a chair, or the drawer fronts of a dresser.

  • Cut out pictures you would like to use. You can get these from magazines, personal photographs, greeting cards, wrapping paper or books. You can also use other mediums such as tissue paper, lace, or fabric.

  • Lay out the pictures on the surface you are using as you would like them to look. When you get them the way you want them, you can begin to glue them.

  • Dilute some regular glue with a little bit of water and spread it on the back of the picture with a paint brush. Then lay down the photo and use the Popsicle stick to smooth out any wrinkles. Use a rag to wipe away any excess glue that comes out over the edges of the picture.

  • When you have the art work exactly like you want it let it dry. When dry, you are ready to coat with a layer of lacquer. Smooth it on so that it covers the entire surface of your art. Use the rag to wipe any excess. It may need a second layer. When it dries, you are done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Craft stores sell specialty glues and finish coats for decoupage if you prefer. You can choose between a matte or shiny top coat.
