How to Call Obvious Shots in Billiards

  1. Step 1

Rack the balls and break them. Rack the balls using the racking triangle provided. Next set up your que ball at the opposite end of the table and break the balls up.

  2. Step 2

Decide on the shot that you want to take. Take a look around the table and decide what shot that you want to take. Make sure that you know whether or not you are stripes or solids before taking a shot.

  3. Step 3

Call the shot. To call a shot in billiards it is rather simple. You just call the ball by its numbers and color (stripes or solids) and then call the pocket that you intend to shoot it into. For example, if you were to call a shot for a 5 of stripes in the corner pocket you would say, “5-ball, corner pocket,” and aim your pool stick towards the intended pocket.

  4. Step 4

Take the shot. The rest is up to you. If you make the shot you called then you get to go again. Otherwise the other player gets to take their turn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you remember to call your shots, even if they are obvious, otherwise other players may ascertain that you did not intend to make those shots.
  • Always remember to call your shot on the 8-ball over any other shot. Make sure that the other players are fully aware of the intended route and pocket of the 8-ball; if you shoot in the 8-ball wrong, you lose.
