Are you one of those who stand on the beach or the dock or the pier and gaze wistfully at the sailboats that go skimming by, wishing you knew what those people know so you could join in? Sailing is tremendous fun: the sun, the breeze and the water. But you’re a bit reluctant—after all, you don’t want to wind up on the other side of the ocean. With some preparation, you can participate in and enjoy recreational sailing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Read some first-hand accounts of sailing adventures. People who love to sail have a wonderful way of inspiring others. Read about the adventure, the challenge, the hard work that goes into sailing. Grow more excited about sailing yourself.
Step2
Take lessons. It seems like a natural: big sails, strong wind and you’re off. Good sailors have a tremendous amount of knowledge, skill and experience under their belts. Work with an instructor or coach who knows what they are doing, buy the book, do the homework and ask questions. Pay attention and work hard and you’ll come away prepared for your maiden voyage around the bay.
Step3
Talk with other people who sail. Learn from them about sailboat-friendly marinas, routes with good wind. Listen and pay attention to their tales of caution. Ask questions.
Step4
Become a member of your local yacht club and learn who is looking for crew. When you sign on as a crew member, you will have an opportunity to refine your sailing skills under the watchful eye of a more experienced sailor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Locate a qualified sailing instructor. The lessons are well worth the investment of time and money.
