The lame is the electronic score keeping device used in fencing competitions. The lame looks similar to a fencing jacket. The foil fencing lame is filled with electronic nodes that can take a measurement each time your opponent strikes you. This allows for more accurate, computerized scoring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what size lame you need. Foil fencing lames come in generalized sizes, so it should be easy to find a size that fits.

  2. Step 2

Try the lame on. It is a good idea to wear all of your gear when trying on new equipment, so that you can see how well all of the pieces fit in relation to each other.

  3. Step 3

If purchasing a used lame, check for dead spots on the lame. If an area is commonly hit over and over, it may wear out and not register the score properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you develop dead spots in your lame, you may want to consider replacing it entirely. It is usually less expensive to buy a new lame than it is to repair the damage to an old one.
