The fencing jacket that you pick is important on a number of different levels. As a garment of clothing, it must be comfortable and flexible. As a matter of functionality, the fencing jacket must be durable enough to help provide a basic layer of protection. And as the main item a spectator sees when they watch you fence, it is important that it give a nice, clean visual representation of who you are.

From Quick Guide: Fencing Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the size that you need your fencing jacket to be. Fencing jackets are sized based on the circumference of your chest, so begin by using your tape measure to get a measurement around your chest. Compare that number to a fencing sizing chart to find out what size you require in a fencing jacket.

  2. Step 2

Decide what materials you want your fencing jacket to be made of. The two basic choices are cotton or synthetic. Cotton fencing jackets are cheap and durable, but are also heavier and bulkier than synthetics. Synthetic fencing jacks are more expensive, but they are much more lightweight and flexible, giving you a greater range of motion.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you want your fencing jacket to be a back zip style, or if you want to pick a fencing jacket with a side zip style. Fencing jackets with zippers in the back can be inconvenient. If you choose a side zip fencing jacket, put the zipper on the opposite side you will be fencing with. That is, if you are right-handed, the zipper side should be on your left, or have the zipper on your right side if you are left-handed.
