We rarely think about what a difference a pair of shoes can make, until we have the wrong ones. Shoes help with balance and coordination and the shoes you choose for fencing are particularly important.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about how often you will make use of your fencing shoes. You can obtain specially designed fencing shoes, but they are expensive and must be special ordered. If you do not fence a lot, it is perfectly normal to make use with a regular athletic shoe.

  2. Step 2

Look at the heel of the shoe, as well as the inner sole. These are the areas that will suffer the most abuse while fencing, so make sure you select a shoe that is well padded in these areas.

  3. Step 3

Try the shoe on. How well does the shoe fit? It must be a nice, snug fit, but without being too tight and be generally comfortable to wear. Otherwise, try again.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you wish to special order a pair of professional fencing shoes, expect to pay no less than $60, with prices exceeding $150 in many instances.
