The plastron is an essential piece of fencing equipment. The role of the plastron is to protect the underarm area in the event of an accidental puncture. It is generally worn on the right side for right-handed individuals, or the left side for left-handed individuals, since this is most likely the side that you will be fencing with. Here is how to choose a plastron for fencing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your fencing jacket and chest armor
  1. Step 1

Judge the general size of the plastron you will be trying on. Although it looks somewhat like half a t-shirt, you should not look at it the same way as a shirt in terms of size. The plastron needs to be slightly bigger so that it can fit over your chest armor.

  2. Step 2

Put on the body armor that you use for fencing. With the armor on, try on the plastron. Adjust all of the straps so that it is secured tightly in place. If everything looks good, move on to Step 3. If not, choose a different size.

  3. Step 3

Put your jacket on over the top of the plastron and fasten it completely. Check your range of motion. If the plastron feels tight or feels like it is restricting your movement at all you may need to try another size. Otherwise, remove your fencing equipment and move to the next step.

  4. Step 4

Analyze the condition of the velcro on the plastron, as well as the stitching that binds the velcro to the plastron. If everything looks good, you’ve found the right plastron for you.
