There is no doubt that a good mask is one of the most important pieces of fencing equipment that you will ever invest in. Eye protection is critical when you are fencing, and the face in general is an area that needs special protection. That is where the fencing mask comes in. The fencing mask is your ultimate protection against unthinkable accidents. Here is how to pick one.

From Quick Guide: Fencing Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about the type of fencing you normally take part in. Those who normally fence with Sabres will require a different face shield than those who do Foil or Epee fencing.

  2. Step 2

Pick the size of the mask you will be looking for. Fencing masks usually come in generic sizes, such as small, medium, large, etc. This makes it easy to find the right size for you, since there are a limited number of sizes to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Try on the mask to make sure it fits well. If your mask is too large, some of the padding may obstruct your view, thus inhibiting your ability to fence.

  4. Step 4

Check the resistance level on the face shield for the fencing mask. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the face shield on your fencing mask can withstand 25 pounds of force.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the tongue for your fencing mask is securely bolted to the mask’s grill. The tongue is a flap of fabric in the back of the fencing mask that allows you to adjust the size. If the tongue is loose or the bolt seems wobbly, pick a different fencing mask.

Tips & Warnings
  • As your dealer if they can custom install padding to give your fencing mask a custom fit.
