Use Contraceptive Sponges for Birth Control

If you're looking for an alternative to the pill, you might be considering a contraceptive sponge. Here's a quick look at how to use them.

From Quick Guide: Types of Birth Control
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Contraceptive sponge
  1. Step 1

A birth control sponge is a contraceptive device used as a barrier to block sperm. If you have discussed birth control with your doctor and he or she agrees that this is a good option for you, have them suggest a brand. You can also look around at the pharmacy and choose a brand you feel confident with.

  2. Step 2

To use the sponge, wash your hands and remove it from the package. Hold the sponge in one hand with the concave side facing up (like a bowl). Wet the sponge with tap water and squeeze it.

  3. Step 3

Fold the sponge in half and insert it into the vagina, along the back wall. It should rest against your cervix.

  4. Step 4

Once inserted, you will be protected from pregnancy for up to 24 hours. Be sure that you leave the sponge in place for at least 6 hours after sexual activity.

  5. Step 5

To remove the sponge, put one finger into the vagina and grab the loop on the end of the sponge. You can then withdraw the sponge from the vagina. If you have trouble removing it, wait a few minutes, relax, and try again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contraceptive sponges can be purchased over the counter.
  • Be careful. The sponge does not protect you from STD's.
  • Do not use during your period.
