1
Wear proper safety gear. A life jacket and shoes are a must. In addition, long pants, sleeves, and a hat will provide some protection from cuts and bumps
-
2
Swim a lot. When you fall in, being a strong swimmer and feeling comfortable in the water will greatly improve your ability to deal with the situation.

3
Don't panic. In all but the most extreme rapids, your chances of survival are overwhelmingly good. In any situation, they are better if you keep your head clear.
-
4
If you are in rapids, keep your feet up and forward. This will protect you from impact and keep your feet from getting stuck under rocks, a major safety hazard in whitewater canoing.
-
5
Stay with the canoe. If you are canoing on your own, hold on to the side or the painter. If you have a partner still in the boat, stay close but allow him to maneuver through the rapids.

Once you are out of the rapids, get in towards the shore. Drag the canoe with you to a shallow area where you can board safely.
