Americans are living longer than ever. As you age, remaining in your own home becomes a major concern. While you certainly can't control everything - accidents and illnesses will occur - there are steps that you can take to help you live at home longer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Emergency list
  • Non-skid mat
  • Grab bars
Step1
Make plans. Who can you call for emergencies? Make a list and keep it handy. What would you do if you were alone and fell, but couldn't get to the phone? Know your actions ahead of time for these contingencies.
Step2
Get some help. If you can, hire someone to help with housework or errands, or enlist friends and family members to assist you.
Step3
Adjust your bathroom. Many accidents in the home happen in the bathroom. Place a non-skid mat in the tub. Install grab rails and purchase a toilet seat adapter that allows you to sit higher.
Step4
Consider replacing steps with ramps that might be easier to navigate and reduce the risk of a fall.
Step5
Place items you use on a regular basis in cabinets and on shelves that are easy to reach.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your local council on aging for more tips and assistance.
