Step 1
Begin using tote bags at the store instead of grocery bags. Both plastic and paper bags create waste and are unnecessary. You can get these tote bags at almost every grocery store nowadays and most of them are under $2.
-
Step 2
Recycle your old grocery bags. Most grocery stores allow you to place old grocery bags into a recycling bin. If yours does not, simply bring your old bags back to the store and reuse them.
-
Step 3
Buy food and other materials that are only packaged in recycled or recyclable containers. For example, many cereal boxes are made from recycled materials. If you can't find these, make sure to recycle any containers that you can when you've finished using them.

Step 4
Buy cleaners that are made only from organic materials. These work just as well as your regular cleaners but are much better for the environment. Organic cleaners allow you clean around your house without using harsh chemicals. You can find organic counter top and window cleaners as well as organic dish and laundry detergent at your local grocery store.

Step 5
Purchase only organic fruits and vegetables. These have not been treated with any harsh chemicals and are better for both you and the environment. While they are more expensive, the difference is usually no more than half a dollar.
