Step 1
Have it mulched. Most cities now have a Christmas tree recycling program in place. Just drop off your tree on the designated day and time and they'll grind it into mulch free of charge.
-
Step 2
Drop it in a lake or pond. It will serve as a welcome habitat for fish and other aquatic life, without taking up valuable landfill space. Just make sure you have permission before you set your tree afloat.
-
Step 3
Put it out on your property. Then, decorate it with peanut butter pinecones, popcorn and suet balls. Birds are sure to appreciate the new shelter and food source, especially during the cold winter months.
-
Step 4
Donate it to a land conservation group. Christmas trees can be used to curb beach erosion, stabilize shorelines and as mulch for hiking trails.
-
Step 5
Use the boughs as ground cover. Just trim the branches off of the tree and lay the pieces over top of your flower beds for added cold-weather plant protection.
