If you are out and about or travel frequently, you may be wondering how you can use your laptop or notebook computer without being connected. This is also called Wi-Fi. In the case of a newer computer, including a desktop in your home or office, this article will provide helpful ideas on how the computer(s) can share Internet connectivity through your wireless network.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Router
  • Wireless signal
  • Hardware

Step1
Example of router Make sure you have an access point (router). This router is located at a home or office, or a provider such as a restaurant, airport, hotel, convention center, public building or coffee shop that advertises wireless access. You cannot get online without having some sort of signal.
Step2
Wireless card (external) for notebook computer Ensure your computer (the one receiving the signal) has the proper equipment such as a wireless card (either built in or external). If you own a desktop computer, then you will need a USB wireless adapter that plugs into any USB slot on your computer. The adapter driver needs to be installed with a CD on some computers if it fails to function and find a signal.
Step3
In the case where you have a wireless card from a web-based provider that works anywhere, you will not need to have a base station or access point. The Internet access is already provided by your Internet service provider through a special wireless card installed on your notebook computer. There is a significant jump in price for this type of "go anywhere" Internet access.
Step4
Example of WEP (Network Key) screen To join a present and secured network you will need the WEP (28 digit secure code) which you will find inside the router information. Or, the SSID which will be provided by the service provider broadcasting the Internet signal. For example, for one airport, it would be ATL-WiFi. You type this in the box when prompted. It helps if you display the characters so you know what you are typing. Not all areas will be secure. If this is the case, be cautious about entering websites where account information or sensitive data is shared.
Step5
Wireless network connection screen example Windows will automatically discover wireless networks. Be sure you are connecting to the proper network and you know what fees you are paying (if any). Double-click on that network and follow the on-screen prompts. The real test will be to see if you can access the Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not care to set up or maintain your wireless network, many cable and DSL providers will do this for you for either a setup charge or monthly fee.
  • Do not connect to networks you are unfamiliar with.
