Never mind New Year’s Eve or Mardi Gras, some of the heaviest drinking takes place on the day dedicated to that Irish Saint. While everyone else in the world seems to be guzzling green beer, you can stay sober on St. Patrick’s Day with a lot of determination and few simple steps.

How to Stay Sober on St. Patrick's Day

  1. Step 1

Stay away from bars and celebrations that include lots of drinking. If you are forced to attend such a function, call some sober friends and make sure you have an escape route if the pressure gets too much.

  2. Step 2

Keep the day in perspective. Do you even care about St. Patrick? Do you even know what he did? Are you even Irish?

  3. Step 3

Remind yourself how awful you’ll feel the next morning, how sick you’ll become and how many empty, useless calories, green beer contains.

  4. Step 4

Honestly ask yourself if it’s worth it. Do you really want to ruin the sober path you’re on just because so many others are drinking? Don’t be a lemming.

  5. Step 5

If you must celebrate, throw a non-alcoholic party for your sober friends or treat yourself to an outing you've always wanted to go on. Go to the latest movie, museum installation or an evening a spa.

  6. Step 6

If all else fails, go find a place to volunteer to help someone worse off than you. See if they got their because of their constant drinking. Having a big heart could be the key that saves you from drinking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Treat yourself to a reward the next day for staying sober. Keep this reward in mind and make it your obsession the night before so you don’t obsess over drinking.
  • Never get yourself stranded somewhere where you won't feel comfortable.
