Things You'll Need:
- A Budget for Purchasing Backpacks
- An Idea of How the Backpack Will Be Used
-
Step 1
Consider how long you will be camping and select a bag size that will carry enough supplies for the trip. Backpacks under 3,000 cubic inches are usually good for day trips or trail hiking. Camping backpacks up to 5,000 cubic inches will generally hold enough supplies to go camping for a few days, while a backpack that is 6,000 cubic inches will easily store a week’s worth of camping supplies.
-
Step 2
Once you have determined the size that you need, try on a few backpacks to see how they fit. Make sure the hip belt is actually at your hips and that the shoulder straps support the backpack in a comfortable position. Once everything is snug, see if you are able to look straight up without the backpack restricting you.
-
Step 3
Look at how well the backpack is constructed. It should have very strong, durable stitching, with extra wide, padded shoulder straps. Take into account the extra pockets and storage space it has and how well they are stitched.
-
Step 4
Consider the weather conditions you're going camping in. If you are camping in wet weather conditions, a waterproof backpack is a necessity.
-
Step 5
Apply your budget to the purchase. Make sure that you do not exceed the limit of your spending budget. Backpacks can be expensive or cheap, so shop around and look for something in your price range.
