Captain Falcon is one of the more difficult characters to use in Smash Bros Melee, since many of his moves will propel you forward and leave you open to counter-attacks. Nonetheless, played correctly, he is a decently strong character.

How to Use Captain Falcon in Super Smash Bros Melee

  1. Step 1

Combo your opponents. Captain Falcon doesn't have a lot of great single moves, but he is very good at stringing them together. Combos can be gotten off of almost any move you hit with mid-air, as well as throwing and recapturing opponents to throw again. The tricky part of the combo is getting in for the first hit. After that, Captain Falcon has a fair arsenal of air moves, grabs and dashes to keep the combo going.

  2. Step 2

Raptor Boost to victory. Your Forward+B attack charges towards an opponent and then releases an uppercut. Although this move is low priority, it is extremely fast. What this means is that if your opponent expects it, he can stop it, but if you can catch your opponent unawares, you can connect in a split-second. This is also the perfect move to start a combo, as the uppercut will often pop your opponent into the air, where you can follow up with some air moves. Raptor Boost is also a great dodging move, due to its speed.

  3. Step 3

Own the air. Captain Falcon can kick and dive with Up+B and Down+B, but where he really shines is his A-button air attacks. Once you've thrown or punched an opponent into the air, jump up and give him some A-button love. Your standard A-button air attack hits twice, making it a good move to use against people who try to block, since they'll often only block one of the two attacks. The Strong Knee, your Forward+A air attack, does double damage at close range, and also can serve as a mighty finisher.

  4. Step 4

Don't hang around on the ground. Captain Falcon's ground moves are mostly ineffective, especially the abysmally telegraphed Falcon Punch. As your standard B-button move, it theoretically does plenty of damage, but the odds of your opponent letting you connect are slim. In cases where someone is falling towards you, focus on throwing your opponents upwards, then get back in the air. If you must stay on the ground, then follow up your throws with a forward smash.

  5. Step 5

Close with your opponents as fast as possible. Characters with a ranged attack will take advantage of your lack in that department and fire free shots at you until you reach them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Captain Falcon in the air makes a great edgeguarder, if you can pull off some aerial knees and I-cancels.
  • Be careful when Raptor Boosting. Do not fall off the edge.
