Pellet guns are a great way for a child to learn basic gun safety. Part of that gun safety should focus on how to properly aim a pellet gun. This is, after all, a gun, so care should be taken in how to aim the pellet gun, rather than just a wild point and shoot.

How to Aim a Pellet Gun

  1. Step 1

The first (and perhaps most important) step is to put on your safety goggles. Safety equipment is important for any sporting activity, but particularly when you are shooting little pieces of metal out of a gun. Protective eye-wear is essential when you are shooting a pellet gun.

  2. Step 2

Set up your target and take up position directly across from it. More advanced shooters may like to shoot at the target from different angles, but those who are just learning how to aim the pellet gun should start with a straight-across shot.

  3. Step 3

Place the butt of the pellet gun firmly against your shoulder and look through the pellet gun’s sights in order to line up on your target. When you look through the notch in the front sight, you should be able to see the bead at the end of the barrel lined up on the target.

  4. Step 4

Release the safety switch on the pellet gun and squeeze the trigger to fire the gun.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have trouble keeping a stead aim, try to lean against something and/or prop the pellet gun barrel on top of something. It also helps if you take a breath and hold it while you squeeze the trigger.
