How to Make Paper Bag Monster Masks

Are you stuck inside on a rainy day with nothing to do? How about making a monster mask and then finding some monster music and dancing like the monster you are pretending to be. All you need is a paper bag like the kind you get at the grocery store, some scissors, construction paper, and glue. Of course, if you don't bring your own imagination, you won't be able to make a monster, will you?

Open the brown paper bag and put it over your head. If you are very tall, you may want to get one of the big brown paper leaf bags instead of a grocery store bag. If you are between three and seven years old, a regular grocery store bag is big enough. Get your mother or another helper to cut an arch shaped hole from the top of the bag (which is the bottom of the monster mask) to the top of your shoulder. An easy way to figure out how big of an arch to cut is to measure the distance from the top of your head to the bottom of your neck. You need the same distance to be uncut on the bag because this will be the part that covers your head and face. The arch shaped holes are so that your arms will stick out and you can move around without tearing the monster mask.

Put the monster mask (that doesn't have a face yet) on. Stick out your arms through the arch shaped shoulder holes. Ask your mother or your helper to draw circles using a marker where your eyes are, where your nose is, and where your mouth is. Take off the brown paper bag. Carefully push the point of your scissors through each circle and cut them out. Now you will be able to become a monster that can see, smell, eat and talk. These things are very important to all paper bag monsters.

Make construction paper eye lashes, lips, scars, eye brows and hair. You could even give your monster yarn hair if you want to. Glue all of these features on your monster mask whereever you think they look the best. Let all the glue dry or else your monster may lose some of its character while you are inside the mask.

Name your monster and decide how it walks or dances. Experiment with different kinds of monster voices. Try to scare your sister, brother, or mother while pretending to be your monster. Put on your monster mask. Look at yourself in a long mirror. Ask somebody to take a picture of yourself in the monster mask and email your picture to your friends and grandparents.
