If you want the best flavor and aroma from nuts when you bake, take just a little time to prepare them before you use them in baking recipes. You'll be surprised by the difference just a few minutes of preparation can make in the overall taste and crunch of just about any nuts you choose to use when you bake.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nuts for baking
  • Soft cloth or paper towel
  • Chopping knife
  • Cutting board
  • Toaster or regular oven
  • Baking sheet
  1. Step 1

Heat the oven to 250 degrees.

  2. Step 2

While the oven is heating, take a soft cloth or paper towel and rub the skins off the nuts (if they have skins).

  3. Step 3

Place the whole nuts on the baking sheet. There's no need to grease the sheet, just place the nuts on the sheet.

  4. Step 4

Place the sheet in the pre-heated oven and toast the nuts for about 10 to 15 minutes. They should be brown, but not burned.

  5. Step 5

    Let the nuts cool.

  6. Step 6

Rub again with the cloth or paper towel to remove any skins that might remain.

  7. Step 7

Coarsely chop the nuts on a cutting board with the chopping knife. Don't chop them too small, as they should be large enough to add a little crunch to the baked goods.

  8. Step 8

Use the nuts in any baking recipe you choose. You'll be surprised at how toasting the nuts really brings out their flavor and makes them much more flavorful in any recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let the nuts burn. Keep a close eye on them while you toast them.
