How to Make an Italian Beef Sandwich thumbnail
Italian beef sandwich with au jus for dipping.

I'm from Chicago and one of the things I miss most is the Italian beef sandwich. Since these Italian-American sandwiches are scarcely available outside Chicago, I have to make my own when I get a craving. Originally sold at hot dog stands by Italian American vendors, this sandwich has become a Chicago favorite. This recipe serves four people. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 packets au jus
  • 1/2 lb. roast beef
  • 4 hoagie buns

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 6 cups of water into a large pot over medium-high heat and add the packets of au jus.

    • 2

Separate the roast beef and add it into pot. Cook roast beef on low heat for approximately 30 minutes to let the flavor of the juices sink in.

    • 3

Toast the hoagie buns for 5 minutes.

    • 4

Place the meat into a hoagie bun. Ladle some au jus into a small condiment cup and dip the sandwich before each bite!

Tips & Warnings

  • Add gardineria mix on top of the beef for an authentic Chicago touch. They add a hint of spice to this delicious sandwich.

  • If you can find a hard Italian roll, you can make this sandwich truly authentic.

  • Cooking beef too long will cause it to dry out.
