Having a stove while backpacking makes the difference between cold sandwiches and having a warm, hearty meal. While many people think of this as a luxury item that they can get by without, the fact is that it can help your survival in a wilderness environment. Even if you do not intend to be out backpacking for more than a couple of hours, you should always make it a habit to carry along some form of backpacking stove and food--just in case.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Budget
  • Knowledge of backpacking environment
  1. Step 1

Start by thinking of the type of weather that you normally go backpacking in. Sometimes fuels behave differently under cold versus hot weather conditions. So you may wish to narrow your search to alcohol stoves, propane stoves and so forth based on the climate that you typically backpack in.

  2. Step 2

Think about how many people for whom you will be cooking. If it is just a simple meal for yourself and a backpacking partner, then a small backpacking stove probably works fine. If you need to cook complicated meals or cook for a lot of people, then you will probably require a larger backpacking stove. Some people prefer to own both types, so that they are prepared for any occasion.

  3. Step 3

Consider the length of your normal backpacking trip. While it may not seem like much weight in the store, the added weight to your pack will add up fast on a long hike. For a short backpacking trip, you may be able to get away with bringing a bulkier stove. For longer trips, having a lightweight backpacking stove is essential.

  4. Step 4

Consider your budget. Most backpacking stoves are affordable, although there are additional costs like fuel and cookware. However, it is important to set a budget and stick to it, whether you are picking a backpacking stove or anything else.

Tips & Warnings
  • In a survival situation, you can always improvise a simple stove by cutting the bottom out of a soda can and then setting the can on top of a tealight candle.
